Drs Abdallah and Salih outlined the Institute's academic and research program for combating desertification during their visit to ICBA. Established by the University of Khartoum in 1996, the Desertification and Desert Cultivation Studies Center was upgraded to an Institute in 2003 to accommodate the UNESCO Chair on Desertification.

Given the Institute's objectives to conduct, encourage and coordinate basic and applied research in the area of desertification, and offer postgraduate programs, there was wide-ranging discussion amongst DADCSI and ICBA scientists about ICBA's latest national projects in the areas of integrated water resources and marginal quality water.

The first day of the three day visit concluded with a donation of Institute publications to Dr Shawki Barghouti, Director General ICBA. On the second day of their visit to the United Arab Emirates, Drs Abdallah and Salih will visit the Tissue Culture Laboratory in Fujairah and return to ICBA for a field trip on their last day.
