Dr (Mrs) Kakoli Ghosh, Team Leader, Seeds and Plant Genetic Resources Group, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations reminded ICBA scientists of this global imperative during her visit on Thursday 8th July 2010. The purpose of Dr Ghosh's visit was to discuss areas of collaboration with ICBA in relation to agriculture and food security, in the context of climate change.

During Dr Ghosh's visit she shared with ICBA scientists FAO's strategy for crop production in the context of plant genetic resources for the food and agriculture continuum. The FAO work is targeting the Millenium Development Goals, as was the project managed by ICBA, in partnership with the NARS of seven countries in WANA (Jordan, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates), Saving freshwater resources with salt-tolerant forage production in marginal areas of the West Asia and North Africa region. The group shared project outcomes and research findings from their respective scientific endeavours.

All scientists at the ICBA/FAO meeting agreed that collaborative effort is critical to double food production by 2050 for the estimated population of 9 billion, while at the same time protecting the agro-biodiversity base. The imperative is to meet these challenges compounded by the major factors such as the reduced land available for agriculture, increased water shortage and the impact of climate change.
