Supporting drought action in Middle East, North Africa through better data

Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for hundreds of millions of people in the developing world. By one estimate, the sector employs more than 28 percent of the global population. This number is much higher in regions like the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) where rural communities depend on farming for their food and income.

Global policy forum mulls how data can prop up drought mitigation

The experts convened in Dubai, UAE, on 25-26 September 2018 at an international policy workshop, which was organized by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA), and the National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC) of the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, USA.
Experts from Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia presented drought monitoring validation results for their respective countries.

Around 40 leading experts from more than 10 countries, including the Czech Republic, Jordan, Lebanon, Mexico, Morocco, South Africa, Tunisia, the UAE and the USA have urged policymakers and governments to speed up development of climate change adaptation strategies to ward off growing risks like drought to food and water security.

ICBA trains Tunisian experts in validating national drought monitoring system

Over 90 Tunisian specialists and researchers attended a two-day training workshop on validating Tunisia’s drought monitoring system.
Participants received hands-on training on the drought management and monitoring system. They learnt techniques in generating real-time drought maps in minutes, using a special open-source program developed by ICBA scientists in collaboration with the University of Nebraska – Lincoln and the National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC) in the US.

The country has experienced several severe droughts in the past years, suffering major economic losses. Alas, lack of accurate drought monitoring and forecasting is making it difficult for policymakers to take early preventive measures. An operational drought monitoring system could help decision-makers better assess the severity and extent of drought and take necessary actions.

Jordan is set to have its first-ever operational drought monitoring system as a result of collaboration between different organizations, including the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL).
