Sustainable Green Waste Recovery

Objectives

  1. Recycle and treat green waste from harsh and saline environments (high in lignocellulose and sodium etc.) in a sustainable way by transforming it into valuable products and compost that can be beneficially used for agriculture, horticulture, erosion control, and many other purposes. 
  2. Test several composting mixtures based on the available vegetation.
  3. Optimize the composting conditions in the arid environment to produce good quality compost by controlling the feedstock’s physical-chemical characteristics.
  4. Optimize the composting conditions by adding co-substrates and the pre-treatment of GW.
  5. Improve the quality of the final product by adding nutrient elements and/or beneficial microorganisms.
  6. Assess the impact of the different produced compost on crop growth and productivity.

Experiment Details

Starting date: 2021 and 2023

Field Variables:

  • 36 small units for composting are divided into two sub-plots. 
  • Two different water quantities for each subplot 
  • Six different mixtures of available feedstock (date palm leaves, Ghaf and Ghaf pod, landscaping grass, date palm fruits, Salicornia and  additive: control, urea and mycorrhiza) and proportion
  • Crop: barley (sown in November 2022)
  • Two replications
