Long-term experiment for evaluation of salinity tolerance among large collections of buffel grass

Objectives

  1. Assess the long-term impact of salinity on buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) germplasm growth and productivity, as well as soil
  2. Evaluate the selected accessions for forage quality under saline conditions
  3. Determine best management practices for forage crops in marginal regions

Experiment Details

Planting date: 2007

Field Variables:

  • A total number of 40 germplasm accessions
  • Salinity levels: 3 (8 dS/m, 16 dS/m, and  24 dS/m)
  • The plots were arranged in strips where each genotype was grown in 2 rows of 4 meters.
