Scientists create new framework for food security analysis in UAE

A team of researchers from the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) and the University of Wollongong in Dubai have developed a novel analytical framework for estimating the food security indicators in the UAE.
Since 2012, ICBA and its partners have been investigating the potential for growing Salicornia under the hot, dry, and saline conditions of marginal environments.
Salicornia research at ICBA reaches important milestones

Farmers around the world often struggle to keep salt out of their lands and crops. But those farmers cultivating the “asparagus of the sea”, known to scientists as Salicornia, welcome the saltwater. Best yet, the inconspicuous, salt-loving Salicornia has the potential to help feed people and livestock, fuel vehicles and mitigate the climate crisis. Scientists at the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) have recognized its potential for the past decade and have made significant advances toward shedding Salicornia’s status as a neglected and underutilized plant species.
A memorandum of understanding to this effect was signed by Dr. Augusto Becerra Lopez-Lavalle, Chief Scientist at ICBA, and Mr. David Rosenberg, Co-Founder and CEO of AeroFarms, during the AeroFarms 2nd Annual AgTech Innovation Summit in Abu Dhabi, the UAE, in February 2023.

The International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) and AeroFarms, a global leader in indoor vertical farming, have agreed to collaborate in a number of areas related to research and development in controlled-environment agriculture systems, including machine learning, AI, and robotics.
