On the sidelines of the second Emirates Agriculture Conference and Exhibition in Al Ain, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and the International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) officially launched the National Agricultural Initiative for the Adoption of Climate-Smart Crops in the UAE.

Through its participation in Tashkent Water Week 2026 and Women Water Week, ICBA reinforced the importance of connecting science, leadership, policy dialogue, and cooperation in support of more resilient water and agricultural systems.

The annual open day serves as a reminder that ICBA’s progress is rooted in collective effort and a long-term vision to build resilient food systems for a changing climate.

An Inception meeting brought together the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, and the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) to strengthen Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for the sustainable management of the Red Palm Weevil within date palm production systems.

Technical discussions with Green University progress plans for a Spirulina laboratory to support IAAS sustainability in the Republic of Karakalpakstan.

As the national tree of the United Arab Emirates, the Ghaf is revered for its ecological, cultural and symbolic value. It stabilises dunes, enriches soils and supports biodiversity in arid environments. Yet despite its importance, little was previously known about the species’ genetic variation or evolutionary history – until now.

The workshop marked an important step toward scaling up project outcomes and strengthening inclusive, resilient, and competitive agribusiness value chains in Karakalpakstan. Spanning two days, the event brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including farmers, cooperative leaders, research institutions, agripreneurs, and representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture.

This international collaboration reflects a practical model of Triangular South–South Cooperation in developing sustainable agricultural production systems.

Organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment under the Mustadeem Program for Youth, the camp brought together students from government schools to explore the science, innovation, and real-world applications that define ICBA’s work.

The official launch ceremony was attended by senior government officials and dignitaries and featured a statement by H.E. Eng. Mohammed Mousa Alameeri, Assistant Undersecretary for the Food Diversity Sector, Ministry of Climate Change and Environment of the UAE.

Aiming to establish a standardized benchmark for sustainable impact, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability, the Impact Seal serves as the official federal recognition of sustainable impact practices in the UAE. It is designed to assess organizations’ commitment to environmental, social, and governance principles and UN Social Development Goals (SDGs) through their policies, programs, and initiatives.

As part of this project, ICBA recently conducted in Dubai, the UAE, a hands-on training workshop on community seed banks for 27 researchers, extension specialists, cooperative members and other stakeholders from the project countries.

Since 2001 the center has conducted different experiments in the UAE to determine the long-term effect of saline water irrigation on date palm growth, productivity, fruit quality, and the impact of salinity on the soil.

The framework allows analysts to derive key indicators that can contribute to food security and nutrition.

Over 200 course completions were registered by learners from 38 countries, including Australia, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Tunisia, and the UAE.
