The workshop marked an important step toward scaling up project outcomes and strengthening inclusive, resilient, and competitive agribusiness value chains in Karakalpakstan. Spanning two days, the event brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including farmers, cooperative leaders, research institutions, agripreneurs, and representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture.

This international collaboration reflects a practical model of Triangular South–South Cooperation in developing sustainable agricultural production systems.

Organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment under the Mustadeem Program for Youth, the camp brought together students from government schools to explore the science, innovation, and real-world applications that define ICBA’s work.

June - August 2025

The official launch ceremony was attended by senior government officials and dignitaries and featured a statement by H.E. Eng. Mohammed Mousa Alameeri, Assistant Undersecretary for the Food Diversity Sector, Ministry of Climate Change and Environment of the UAE.

Aiming to establish a standardized benchmark for sustainable impact, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability, the Impact Seal serves as the official federal recognition of sustainable impact practices in the UAE. It is designed to assess organizations’ commitment to environmental, social, and governance principles and UN Social Development Goals (SDGs) through their policies, programs, and initiatives.

As part of this project, ICBA recently conducted in Dubai, the UAE, a hands-on training workshop on community seed banks for 27 researchers, extension specialists, cooperative members and other stakeholders from the project countries.

Since 2001 the center has conducted different experiments in the UAE to determine the long-term effect of saline water irrigation on date palm growth, productivity, fruit quality, and the impact of salinity on the soil.

The framework allows analysts to derive key indicators that can contribute to food security and nutrition.

Over 200 course completions were registered by learners from 38 countries, including Australia, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Tunisia, and the UAE.

Dr. Tarifa Ajeif Alzaabi has been appointed as the Center’s new Director General, becoming the first Emirati to hold the position since ICBA’s foundation in 1999.

In the presence of Her Excellency Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Prof. Khaled Amiri, a member of ICBA’s Board of Directors, and global visionary Sadhguru, founder of Conscious Planet, signed the agreement during Sadhguru’s visit to Jubail Mangrove Park in Abu Dhabi. After the signing, Sadhguru, Her Excellency, Prof. Khaled Amiri, and several VIP guests participated in mangrove planting, organized by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) in cooperation with Juba

The experiment began with the cultivation of Chal tomato, a South Korean tomato variety, in a customized low-cost greenhouse facility adapted to local conditions.

At the event, H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and the Ruler of Sharjah, was briefed by Dr. Tarifa Alzaabi, Acting Director General of ICBA, about the center’s work on wheat and how it identifies, tests and preserves wheat varieties suited to environments like the UAE. The eleven-strong board will serve a three-year term and comprises renowned leaders, scientists and experts from governmental and non-governmental agencies, donor institutions, as well as research and development organizations from Australia, Brazil, China, Finland, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Togo, the UAE, and the USA.
