About 920 extension workers and irrigation experts were trained in the target countries during the project implementation. In addition, 20 farmer field days were organized regularly to provide smallholder farmers with first-hand information about these technologies. During field demonstrations, some 11,475 smallholder farmers visited trial sites and the impact survey showed that the Californian irrigation system was adopted on more than 50,000 hectares of land in all four countries.

Published in Nature Food, the study tracks footprints of diverse ancestral wheat relatives in bread wheat. It highlights their importance for enriching modern elite wheat cultivars and improving stress adaptation of wheat under climate change scenarios.

As a joint venture between ICBA and BGI, the world’s largest genomic research institution, the Desert Life Science Laboratory (DLSL) will help to fast-track the discovery and development of food and other crops suited to marginal environments, that is agroecosystems constrained by a range of factors such as water scarcity, soil and water salinity, heat and drought, among others.

Under the agreement, ICBA and UAL will collaborate on creating innovative technologies for saving water and energy in controlled environment agriculture (CEA) systems.

As part of the project activities, ICBA recently organized two workshops for farmers and researchers to demonstrate how to use the application for data collection related to plant diseases.

Published in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews (a journal with an impact factor of 14.98), the study presents some interesting results that can have regional implications. Moreover, the study indicates that practices like using brackish groundwater for irrigation could be an option to address water scarcity in lift irrigation zones.

Published in Advances in Agronomy, a book series, the study led by the University of California, Davis reviews the status of global soil salinity research and analyzes the progress in combating soil salinization in different parts of the world.

Climate-resilient crops like quinoa hold great potential for food security and nutrition in marginal environments.

Dr. Tarifa Alzaabi, Acting Director General of ICBA, and Dr. Khalid Al-Khazraji, Vice-President of Zayed University, signed a memorandum of understanding to this effect in the presence of H.E. Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, UAE Minister of State for Food and Water Security, at ICBA’s headquarters in Dubai.

As part of the trials at the center’s experimental station in Dubai, scientists will assess the adaptability of the varieties to the local conditions and determine the best irrigation method.

The Halophytic Kitchen Lab seeks to encourage both young people and adults to learn more about the health and other benefits of consuming foods based on nutritious halophytic crops which are cultivated with saline water in desert conditions.

The academy will draw on its resources and experience as the educational arm of Dubai SME - the agency of Dubai Economy mandated to develop the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector - to develop various programs with the support of ICBA to improve the knowledge and skills of university students, women and the youth in general in different disciplines related to agriculture and enable them to be successful entrepreneurs in this sector.

The study collected the latest information about soil museums and museums with permanent exhibitions on soils around the world, including the Emirates Soil Museum hosted by the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA).

The machine was jointly designed and built by the Scientific Research Institute of Mechanization and Electrification of Agriculture; Tashkent State Agrarian University; and the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA).

Called the power of triple noon or 3N (derived from the Arabic letter ن, which is pronounced as noon), the initiative was launched on Zayed Humanitarian Day (19th day of the month of Ramadan), and represented three key actions: grow, harvest and share.
