Prosopis cineraria: a benevolent tree of the deserts

P rosopis cineraria is an evergreen tree that inhabits the dry and hot regions of the Middle East and South Asia. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other Arab countries P. cineraria is commonly called ghaf. A very useful tree that generously supplies food to human, livestock and wild animals, the green canopy of the Prosopis also provides cool shade from the blistering desert heat to a wide range of wildlife. Given its importance to the people, domestic animals and wildlife of the country, it is considered to be the national tree of the UAE.
