Short-term Consultancy: Development of E-Learning course content on “Agricultural Value Chain”

The International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) is an international, non-profit agricultural research center established in 1999 through the visionary leadership of the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Fund, and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD), . ICBA is a unique applied agricultural research center focused on marginal areas where an estimated 1.7 billion people live. It identifies, tests and introduces resource-efficient, climate-smart crops and technologies that are best suited to different regions affected by salinity, water scarcity and drought. Through its work, ICBA helps improve food security and livelihoods for some of the poorest rural communities worldwide. As part of ICBA’s efforts to reach more stakeholders around the world and transfer knowledge through capacity development offerings, ICBA is developing an E-Learning platform. This platform will provide a collection of digitized training courses in different topics. These courses will target stakeholders worldwide, including experts, technicians, extension officers, and graduate, and post-graduate students.

Job Summary

The assignment for this consultancy is to develop an E-learning course material on the “Agricultural Value Chain”. The course targets agribusiness managers, professionals in agri-food authorities, experts, technicians, extension officers, and students in fields related to agricultural value chains. The language of the course is English.

This e-learning course on “Agricultural Value Chains” should be designed to provide participants with an understanding of the concept of agricultural value chains and their role in enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of the agricultural sector. Participants will learn about the key elements of value chains, potential challenges, and strategies to overcome those challenges.

The learning objectives of the course are:

  • Understand the concept of agricultural value chains.

  • Identify the key elements of agricultural value chains.

  • Learn about the challenges that can arise in agricultural value chains and strategies to overcome them.

  • Explore the role of value chains in enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of the agricultural sector.

Job Responsibilities

The consultancy will include the followings deliverables:

  1. Course syllabus including introduction, learning objectives and learning outcomes.
  2. Module 1: Introduction to Agricultural Value Chains 
  • Definition of Agricultural Value Chains

  • Understanding the components of value chains

  • Case studies of successful value chains

  • Learning assessment on the module

  • Reading material – open sources – for the module

   3. Module 2: Challenges in Agricultural Value Chains 

  • Challenges in agricultural value chains: market access, quality and standards, pricing and payment, transportation and logistics, and information and communication

  • Strategies for overcoming challenges in agricultural value chains

  • Tools for enhancing value chain competitiveness.

  • Learning assessment on the module

  • Reading material – open sources – for the module

   4.Module 3: Sustainable Agricultural Value Chains 

  • Sustainable agriculture and value chains

  • Best practices for sustainable value chains

  • The role of public-private partnerships in developing sustainable value chains

  • Learning assessment on the module

  • Reading material – open sources – for the module

   5.Final learning assessment on the course


Other requirements

  • The consultant will prepare the training contents using ICBA templates and branding guidelines.

  • ICBA will keep the right to use the provided material in other training contents and/or translate them to other language while maintaining the credit to the author.

  • The consultant is expected to finalize the course material within four months after signing the consultancy agreement.

  • The consultant should provide ICBA with updated CV and a passport copy.

  • The consultant must provide links to all open-source images, videos, data, and similar resources used in the training. ICBA can share their resources to include in the contents, if available

Qualifications and Experience
  • Ph.D. in agribusiness or related field.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in value chains in agriculture.
  • Previous experience in developing educational or training contents, especially e-learning contents.
  • Fluent in English
