Volunteering Opportunities for COP28

The International Center for Biosaline Agriculture(ICBA) is an international, non-profit agricultural research center established in 1999 through the visionary leadership of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Fund, the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD), and the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). ICBA is a unique applied agricultural research center in the world that is focused on marginal areas where an estimated 1.7 billion people live. It identifies, tests, and introduces resource-efficient, climate-smart crops and technologies that are best suited to different regions affected by salinity, water scarcity and drought. Through its work, ICBA helps improve food security and livelihoods for some of the poorest rural communities worldwide. 

 

Job Summary

The UAE will host COP28 at Expo City Dubai from 30 November-  12 December 2023. The International Center for Biosaline Agriculture- ICBA drafted a comprehensive plan of initiatives tailored to National & International priorities, aligning with COP 28.

ICBA designed its initiatives to contribute to six themes: world climate action, nature, land use and oceans, food and water systems, youth, education & skills, and finally, finance and gender equality. All proposed initiatives aim to foster partnership and collaboration at national and international levels and mobilize resources for climate action and sustainable development challenges, especially regarding food security & nutrition, climate action, youth, and women.

ICBA is known for investing in youth and building their skills toward scientific discovery and environmentally sustainable contributions. In alignment with that, ICBA is pleased to open some volunteering opportunities for youth to support in the preparations for COP28. This engagement will expose them to working with professionals in the field as well as contribute to ICBA’s agenda towards COP28.

Job Responsibilities

Volunteering opportunities in the following fields:

1. Graphic Design & Marketing: 

  • To develop graphics for marketing & communication materials
  • Conceptualizing visuals based on requirements.
  • Testing graphics across various media
  • Develop illustrations, logos, and other designs using software or manually.
  • Amend designs after feedback, if necessary.

2. Youth Engagement:

  • Support with organization and administration of tasks for the local conference of youth (LCOY) at ICBA.
  • Overseeing the setup and breakdown of event spaces, including stages & seating areas.
  • Assisting/ greeting all guests & contribute towards the success of COP28.
  • Working with event planners to ensure all logistical details are handled properly.

3. Women's Inclusion in Agriculture:

  • Work on team-based capstone projects to initiate collaborative solutions for driving positive change in agriculture.
  • Access information and tools needed to acquire funding for applied research projects.
  • Experience different cultures through learning to work with others across boundaries of place and culture.
  • Raise awareness about organizational gender dynamics, shift attitudes around gender perceptions, and participate in transforming a responsive culture and inclusive and enabling environment.
  • Support projects related to women’s engagement in agriculture.

4. Events planning and management

  • Support in organizing logistics with conferences, events, seminars, etc.
  • Ability to manage high-profile corporate events, seminars, conferences, exhibitions, and travel programs.
  • Think outside the box and implement uniqueness in ideas.
  • Assist marketing in improvising the event planning.

5. Content Creator

  • Monitor SEO and user engagement and suggest content optimization, if required.
  • Define the most important social media KPIs.
  • Stay updated with the latest social media best practices & technologies.
  • Creating original and engaging content for various social media platforms.

6. Children’s Education & Engagement

  • Provide a structured plan to support children’s growth.
  • Plan sessions based on available spaces and resources.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of children at all times.
  • Report incidents, if any, accurately.
  • Comprehensive understanding of child development theories and the ability to apply them in a practical- play based environment.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to develop effective working relationships, be flexible across professional and operational boundaries & communicate professionally with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Good understanding of communication channels (e.g. Social media, press releases).
  • Confident speaker with the ability to pay attention/oversee minor details.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.

Successful candidates MUST be based in the UAE, and have the basic knowledge of the selected field/ initiative. This role is unpaid and voluntary. Upon completion, a certificate of recognition shall be provided.
