The International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) and the Abu Dhabi City Municipality have completed the first phase of a project to create a new sustainable garden for halophytic, or salt-loving, and salt-tolerant plants at Al Shahama, the emirate of Abu Dhabi.

High-level stakeholder meeting mulls way forward for new project in Karakalpakstan

Launched with funding from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), the project will be implemented by the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) through its Regional Office for Central Asia and the South Caucasus in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in partnership with the Ministry of Innovative Development of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Agriculture of Uzbekistan. New project aims to boost agri-production in degraded areas of Aral Sea basin

Published in Agricultural Water Management, the study is based on the results of an experiment carried out at ICBA’s research station in Dubai from 2001 to 2016. Researchers evaluated the performance of 18 local and regional date palm varieties in an open-field area of 2.5 hectares.

Dr. Tarifa Ajeif Alzaabi has been appointed as the Center’s new Director General, becoming the first Emirati to hold the position since ICBA’s foundation in 1999.

New director general is appointed at ICBA

Since 2002 the center has conducted different experiments in the UAE to determine the long-term effect of saline water irrigation on date palm growth, productivity, fruit quality, and the impact of salinity on the soil. The experiments are conducted on 18 date palm varieties from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, including Nabtat Sultan and Am-Al-Hamam, which are found to be very sensitive to salinity.

International Center for Biosaline Agriculture Signs Cooperation Agreement with Conscious Planet Movement to Save Soil

Under the project titled “Evaluation of diverse and nutrient-rich, climate-resilient crops/accessions for dietary diversification in marginal environments”, ten food crops such as pearl millet, finger millet, foxtail millet, fonio, proso millet, barnyard millet, buckwheat, moth bean and spices (cumin and ajwain) have been tested under varying salinity conditions.
