Biosalinity Newsletter

The study was part of the Rehabilitation and Management of Salt-affected Soils to Improve Agricultural Productivity (RAMSAP) project. Funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the five-year project (2015-2019) is aimed at increasing agricultural productivity, food security and income for smallholder farmers, agro-pastoral/pastoral communities in Ethiopia and South Sudan.

February 2019

The International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) and the Ministry of Innovative Development of Uzbekistan signed a memorandum of understanding to establish an international innovation center for the Aral Sea Basin under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

October 2018

The experts convened in Dubai, UAE, on 25-26 September 2018 at an international policy workshop, which was organized by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA), and the National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC) of the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, USA.

Mr. Rustam Abdusattorov, a livestock farmer in Jizzakh Region, Uzbekistan, struggles to provide enough fodder for his flock and has to purchase feed in the market.

The nine-member board comprises renowned leaders and experts from government and non-government organizations, donor agencies, as well as international research and development organizations from the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe and Australia.

Following the discussions, the delegation toured ICBA’s facilities, including the Emirates Soil Museum, gene bank, net-house and greenhouse facilities, the Integrated Aqua-Agriculture System, biochar production sites, and experimental fields on date palm, Salicornia and forages.

Alternative, non-traditional crops and technologies can play an important role in contributing to future food security in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This was one of the main points made during an open day and round-table discussions attended by H.E. Mariam Bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of State for Future Food Security, at International Center for Biosaline Agriculture, the winner of the Best Arab Research Center at the Best Arab Awards in 2017.

During the visit, a high-profile meeting was organized between H.E. Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri – Minister of State for Future Food Security, Dr. Wang Jian and senior BGI executives, and Dr. Ismahane Elouafi, Director General of ICBA.

H.E. Mariam Almheiri and H.E. Sarah Al Amiri toured ICBA’s research facilities accompanied by Professor Abdulrahman Sultan Alsharhan, Chairman of ICBA’s Board of Directors, Dr. Ismahane Elouafi, ICBA’s Director General, and Ms. Seta Tutundjian, Director of Partnerships and Knowledge Management Division.

January 2018

Scientists from ICBA introduced a low-cost irrigation system, known as the Californian irrigation system, in Mali and other countries among groups of smallholder farmers who grow a variety of crops.

During her visit, Her Excellency Minister of State Mariam bint Hareb Al Mehairi held a meeting with Dr. Ismahane Elouafi, Director General of ICBA, as well the senior management and scientists, and was briefed about the center’s research-for-development initiatives.

Dr. Ismahane Elouafi, Director General of ICBA, and H.E. Director General of AOAD, Prof. Ibrahim Adam Ahmed El-Dukheri, discussed a wide range of areas for collaboration.

Every year ICBA offers several internships and fellowships to young women students and researchers from around the world to conduct studies at its world-class facilities. The center also focuses a great deal of efforts on offering research opportunities to women from the Middle East and North Africa region.

Dr. Dionysia Angeliki Lyra, a halophyte agronomist at ICBA, presents her project to the selection panel of the Expo 2020 Dubai’s Expo Live Innovation Impact Grant Programme.
