Published in Agricultural Water Management, the study is based on the results of an experiment carried out at ICBA’s research station in Dubai from 2001 to 2016. Researchers evaluated the performance of 18 local and regional date palm varieties in an open-field area of 2.5 hectares.

New study gauges long-term salinity effect on date palm fruit yield

Dr. Tarifa Ajeif Alzaabi has been appointed as the Center’s new Director General, becoming the first Emirati to hold the position since ICBA’s foundation in 1999.

New director general is appointed at ICBA

Since 2002 the center has conducted different experiments in the UAE to determine the long-term effect of saline water irrigation on date palm growth, productivity, fruit quality, and the impact of salinity on the soil. The experiments are conducted on 18 date palm varieties from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, including Nabtat Sultan and Am-Al-Hamam, which are found to be very sensitive to salinity.

In the presence of Her Excellency Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Prof. Khaled Amiri, a member of ICBA’s Board of Directors, and global visionary Sadhguru, founder of Conscious Planet, signed the agreement during Sadhguru’s visit to Jubail Mangrove Park in Abu Dhabi. International Center for Biosaline Agriculture Signs Cooperation Agreement with Conscious Planet Movement to Save Soil

Under the project titled “Evaluation of diverse and nutrient-rich, climate-resilient crops/accessions for dietary diversification in marginal environments”, ten food crops such as pearl millet, finger millet, foxtail millet, fonio, proso millet, barnyard millet, buckwheat, moth bean and spices (cumin and ajwain) have been tested under varying salinity conditions.

Millets show promise for dietary diversification in arid, saline environments

As part of a study under way at ICBA’s research station in Dubai in collaboration with the South Korean company AgroTech Co. Ltd., the scientists are looking to develop, test and introduce a sustainable vertical farming system that can help to increase agricultural production in hot and arid conditions while consuming much less water and energy compared to standard systems.

The event was hosted under ICBA’s community initiative called 3N, or the power of triple noon (derived from the Arabic letter ن, which is pronounced as noon). The three Arabic letters of the initiative represent three key actions: grow, harvest, and share.
